Matthew McFarlane
Most of my adult life has been spent in Business. Since I graduated from Law School in 2008, I have started, grown and exited multiple successful businesses. Stress, depression and unhappiness were my constant companions until I discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in August of 2012 (at the insistence of my brother). My life changed that day. I can say with confidence that there is nothing better for both the mind and body than BJJ.
On August 15th, 2022, I received my Black Belt from Professor Eddie Avelar. It is one of the greatest achievements of my life and is the culmination of thousands of hours on the mats. Those hours taught me many things, but chief among them was the importance of struggle and failure. You cannot achieve black belt with your ego intact. All of your preconceived notions about your physical and mental ability will be reshaped through the incontrovertible reality of mortal combat.
I have a passion for teaching and helping others. My goal is to create a place of self discovery and personal growth at GDTW Jiu-Jitsu Academy. BJJ has been a gift in my life, and I would like to pass that gift on to all who walk through our doors.
The beauty of this art is that there is no destination. There is only the journey and it blessedly never ends.

Jessica Sims - McFarlane
I was born and raised in Edmonton Alberta, Canada. At 19 I moved to California to pursue a Show Jumping career, I worked at Olympic and World Cup level barns for many years before taking a step back to pursue other interests. I still spend a few hours a week at the barn, as well as rock climb and work as an accounting assistant in the Oil & Gas Industry. I started Jiu-Jitsu at 40 yrs old. After years of “someday I want to…”, I finally tagged along with a friend and was hooked immediately. I have done a lot of things in my Life, but Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most challenging and life changing. I am excited to be able to pass it on to the community. I love to teach and help people grow and reach their goals. Teaching is one of the most fulfilling and purposeful things you can do with your life. GDTW is truly a passion project, and we are excited to see where it takes us.

I have been in martial arts since I was 7. I began in the style developed by Chuck Norris which was a system that blended stand up and ground martial arts. I earned my 6th degree black belt in the Chuck Norris system and my 4th degree black belt in Krav Maga. Over the years I gravitated more and more toward Brazilian Jui Jitsu eventually earning my black belt in 2023 under Professor Reggie Cochran. I found great enjoyment and empowerment in being able to out leverage and out-smart people bigger and stronger than me. I have had the privilege of training with many talented instructors, including Carlos Machado, Jean Jaques Machado, Richard Nortan and many more! I love sharing my knowledge with others who are passionate for the art. One can never learn all there is to know about BJJ and every discovery can be just as exciting as the last.
